ABOUT　Chiaki Kano

Chiaki Kano was born in Chiba, Japan in 1971 and based to Tokyo.Graduating from the Photography Course of the correspondence education at Kyoto University of the Arts.She has participated in numerous solo exhibitions and photographic projects, exhibiting her work in galleries and museums..Her practice explores the relationship between the visible and the invisible, encompassing themes such as memory, absence, testimony, and the passage of time.
Drawing on art history, architecture and extensive field research, I visit sites linked to historical memory and present works that observe how traces of the past remain within landscapes, buildings and communities. I am exploring ways of creating art that allows memory, place and lived experience to engage in a meaningful dialogue.

As part of a long-term project ongoing since 2021, she has focused on the descendants of Japan’s hidden Christians, documenting memories and testimonies that might be lost with the passing of generations through interviews, photography, archival research and editing. This culminated in an exhibition in Nagasaki.
 


京都芸術大学通信教育部芸術学部美術科写真コース卒業後、個展、写真プロジェクトなどに多数参加、ギャラリーや美術館などで作品を発表。記憶、不在、証言、そして時の経過といったテーマを含め、目に見えるものと見えないものとの関係を制作する。

美術の歴史、建築学、そして広範な現地調査に基づき、歴史的記憶と結びついた場所を訪れ、風景や建物、そしてコミュニティの中に、過去の痕跡がどのように残されているかを観察した作品を発表。記憶、場所、そして生きた経験が、意味ある対話を続けられるような作品づくりの探究を続けている。

2021年から進行中の長期プロジェクトとしては、日本のかくれキリシタンの子孫に焦点を当て、インタビュー、写真撮影、アーカイブ調査、編集作業を通して、世代の移り変わりと共に失われてしまうかもしれない記憶や証言を記録。過去に京都と長崎で発表を開催した。
